What if you no longer had to work to make a living? Part Two.

6. Take advantage of every discount and saving you can (for the things you really need!)

Buying what we need at a reduced price is a bargain. Buying in bulk and freezing/storing for later could earn us a large saving on our staple items. Buying a new jersey when it is on sale or discounted, knowing that we need one for next winter, is just good practise.

7. Eat in

A rump steak prepared at a restaurant sells for about R150. For a 200-gram steak that equates to R650 per kilogram. A kilogram of rump at the supermarket would cost R150. Would you rather pay R150 for a 200-gram rump or R150 for a kilogram?

8. Buy the home you need

Buying a smaller home with a smaller garden means there is less maintenance to be done on the home. It also means that there is less of a need for a domestic worker or a gardener to assist. A bigger home also means higher levies and higher rates and taxes. A swimming pool is a money pit, unless: it is big enough to do laps and we swim every day, it is difficult to justify it as a need.

9. Less stuff

Buying less stuff to clutter the house means less maintenance, lesser cost of replacement and less insurance.

10. Keep your entertainment costs down

A trip to the movies with popcorn and a coke could easily cost a couple of hundred rand (Let’s not even talk about 3D IMAX!)

So, what can we do that costs very little?

  1. Library

  2. Beach

  3. Local Park Run

  4. Movies at home (DVD or streaming)

  5. Cook a special meal at home rather than go to a restaurant (R650 per kilo for a steak? Pfft!)

  6. Picnic at a public park

  7. Bring and braai/potjie/Pot luck at home

  8. Start a creative hobby that generates money (people will pay good money for cakes, cupcakes and other assorted goodies for example)

  9. Listen to a podcast or the radio
